Artist Statement: Alise Loebelsohn works at the intersection of painting and relief, using plaster, oil paint, and wax to construct surfaces that feel both formed and eroded. Her practice is rooted in material accumulation—building, scraping, embedding, and sealing layers that hold traces of process as much as image. Through the slow interplay of rigid and fluid substances, her works develop as compressed histories rather than resolved compositions. Plaster provides structure and weight, oil paint introduces depth and optical instability, and wax acts as both veil and preservative, alternately revealing and obscuring what lies beneath. Loebelsohn’s work is less about depicting a subject than about staging conditions of emergence and disappearance. Surface becomes a site of tension: between solidity and fragility, opacity and translucency, permanence and decay. What remains is not a fixed image, but a record of transformation—an ongoing negotiation between material, time, and perception.
