- The figures in my paintings and drawings are engaged in private, often inexplicable dramas. The images mostly happen without plan, improvised in the act of their making - they arrive like the unbidden images of dreams which seem to compel us to ponder some vague, ill-considered aspect of our life. I look for a deeper recognition in them that is personal but also social. My sense is that they could serve as metaphors for the inner life of our shared world. The work’s emotional effect on a viewer - including myself - is of paramount importance.
