Artist’s Profile – Arts Gowanus

Artist Statement: Daniel Castro is a Puerto Rican artist from the Bronx who makes multi-media works that focus on representing people of color and the experience of being from an urban community. His works often utilize self-portraiture as a means to speak to a broader group of people, while retaining a level of specificity by detailing his own experiences. The figures in his pieces tend to be “body-less”, depicting only the clothing that the figure is wearing as a metaphor for the discrimination that minorities face based on their outward appearance.
