- Echoing her three-decade preoccupation with the Gowanus Canal, Elizabeth O’Reilly turns to a 1950s motel on Long Island’s North Fork and cabins in Cushing, Maine. Lit by sunlight and dappled with leaf shadows, white cabins sit frozen in time among plastic chaises longues and red picnic tables. One cabin’s windows mirror the landscape, deterring the viewer from looking in. These are places caught halfway between use and abandonment, where nature waits to reclaim the manmade. Unexpectedly vibrant man-made color clashes with the cooler tones of water, sky, and shifting light, lending a quirky beauty and poetic loneliness to the ordinary.
