- Artist Statement
- Hepner’s work explores shared space and spatial awareness as an antidote to neo-imperialist occupation of space. She gives agency to the intimacy of the everyday. The reality of living in the same space as others can become romantic. She focuses on desexualizing intimacy in Western culture and allowing intimacy to exist as a subset of Feminist Resilience, where the act of sharing space is one of care and collective strength. Through figure paintings and monotypes, she sets up situations where intimacy is questioned. Quarantine has helped to examine how space is shared when people are enclosed together. Is there constant interaction? Is there organic separation? Her work serves as vignettes: stories being told through interaction of bodies or lack thereof.
