What does it mean to put paint to canvas in a time of breakneck technological change, alongside looming threats to our climate and to humanity’s future? For years, I have created paintings that oscillate between representation and materiality and that make contemporary reference to centuries-old genres and artifacts, including early Italian Renaissance ceramic reliefs, 17th Century Dutch still life, and antiquated museum diorama displays. Today, I seed my work with AI-generated images, created from neural networks and diffusion models. These tools open a window to an uncanny and uncertain future. If I look closely, I see the limits of painting as a route of connection to a fragile world.
