Artist’s Profile – Arts Gowanus

Artist Statement: I am painter and PhD Candidate in Cultural Analysis & Theory at Stony Brook University, where I also teach film, philosophy, cultural studies, and writing. My artwork inspires and is inspired by my research, which analyzes material culture, ideology, tech, and the environmental crisis. When painting, I employ abstract expressionist techniques, spontaneously creating layers of texture and color (at times with mixed media); I then balance the resulting surfaces with detailed brushwork influenced by romanticism and natural forms. My work evokes aesthetics of the uncanny, memory, worldhood, materiality, and the tension of the nature/culture relation.
