Artist Statement: Grace Lynne Haynes is a Brooklyn based multidisciplinary artist working across painting and sculpture. Known for bold color, mystic forms, and recurring otherworldly figures, Haynes builds speculative worlds that explore Black femininity, mythology, and possibilities beyond linear understandings of space. Drawing from Afrofuturist ideologies and symbolic traditions of representation, her work considers world building as a space for cultural imagination, liberation, and new ways of being. Originally from California, Haynes received her MFA from Rutgers University in 2022. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Harvey B. Gantt Center, the Dakar Biennale, and the Ontario Museum of History and Art. She was part of the inaugural cohort of Kehinde Wiley’s Black Rock Senegal residency and has been featured twice on the cover of The New Yorker. Her work has also appeared in CNN Art & Style, Whitewall Magazine, New American Paintings, Culture Type, and Vogue. Her work is held in public and private collections including the Pérez Art Museum Miami, the California African American Museum, The Bunker Artspace, and X Museum in Beijing. Most recently, Haynes has expanded her practice into sculpture through the Powerhouse Arts residency program and is currently an AIR at Art for Change.
