- Artist Statement
- 170 Second Street has housed many including the Brooklyn Asphalt Company, Montauk Paint Factory, and most recently, the late Mardig Kachian – a renowned sculptor and real estate trailblazer. However, after his swift exit of the warehouse and of this world in 2020, the building was left untouched. As if he had been raptured, all of his tools, his unfinished works, sketches, his coffee cup still positioned where he had left it years prior... until now. Mr. Ron Creamer, the newest steward of the space, has a keen eye and deep commitment to honoring this missing savant, which in turn pulled me in and towards the completion of one of the most important groups of work I have created to date. When I put pen to paper to write about this work I find I have very little to say about the part I played in its making. To reconfigure the works of a deceased artist is not a puzzle I always felt worthy of solving. And yet, the most successful works are the ones that simply make themselves. This work isn’t about me as an artist or even Mardig - it’s about objects. They call to you when you listen, and I merely have been the puppet meeting them in response. In one of his journals, Mardig writes: “It can be argued that a thing cannot be itself outside of relations to other things, that distinctions cannot exist outside of relationship, that there are only distinctions between things. True enough, but we must understand that distinction is not the conceptual point at which we are to arrive, but only our means of getting there. The point is recognition of the inner nature of a thing from which all external relationships distract”
