Artist’s Profile – Artists Directory

Artist Statement: As a visual artist, I’ve always resented requests for the words that make up an Artist’s Statement. I don’t recall seeing any such statements at the recent Raphael show at the Met! It seems to me that the best people to write these things are art historians and academics, not artists. But (un)fortunately I’m not dead yet, and not nearly accomplished or interesting enough. When written by artists themselves, Artist Statements are more exercises in Branding and Marketing (aka, Lies) than any act of telling the truth. (Maybe truth is the thing that separates Art from Content?) And the truth is that these are just pictures of people I’ve known, places I’ve been, and things I’ve done that I remember fondly. There’s no grand design. I’m not trying to be inclusive/exclusive. I’m not trying to change anyone’s mind about anything or provide any insight into anything. I painted them for myself and it’s just a little embarrassing to have to explain them to anyone. Feel free to make up your own mind.
