- My paintings document the reconstruction of communities affected by disasters, both natural and man-made. Drawings done on site as communities rebuild become source material for encaustic paintings that pare architecture into the simplified shapes that make them universal, underlining the fragility of the infrastructure that all communities rely upon for shelter and safety. Glowing colors and seductive surfaces evoke Byzantine enamels. These are crafted as objects of beauty to force us to look directly at uncomfortable truths about the fragility of our infrastructure and our human desire to rebuild the familiar, even when pressure from climate change makes our efforts feel ultimately futile.
