Artist Statement: I make large hand embroidered paintings about the cultural ethos of violence that defines so much of American society. I look specifically at how trauma is expressed through bodily gestures, how arms, legs, torsos, hand gestures and facial expressions are similarly positioned, all of these shapes and forms expressing the emotional truth of the contemporary human condition. I juxtapose images of immigrants with those of people during and shortly after a mass shooting to abstract out this view on American trauma. www.mateogutierrez.net
