Artist Statement
I use abstract sculpture and installation to explore human perception, especially bias and its close cousin, logical fallacy. While my work incorporates materials that are emblematic of the places I’ve lived – horse hair from Texas, couture supplies from France, tatami grass from Japan – much of it consists of thermoplastic (a glass-like shrink plastic) mounted sideways like fins on surfaces such as birch panels or plexiglass. My latest series of sculptures begins with idioms that make reference to birds. The Bird Brains are a glossary of fallacies and biases that are so pervasive they have become sayings, stories, or metaphors.
