Artist’s Profile – Arts Gowanus

Artist Statement: I sculpt in clay and initially focused on figurative work. While living in Belize, an interest in coral reefs and the impact of global warming led to sculpting corals. A natural progression was to combine the corals with figurative work. I use a variety of clay bodies, underglazes and mason stains to highlight the textural patterns, composition, and colors. My intension is to bring the underwater world above the surface to keep it visible. Due to the acceleration of climate change, the possibility that these incredible structures and life forms could be destroyed by a 2° rise in ocean temperatures is a future reality unless human intervention can correct the negative impacts we have propagated.
