Artist Statement

My name is Sylvie Freedman. I am an oil painter. For this Open Studios, I am showing a project I’ve been working on about the pervasive and omnipresent surveillance that we are put under every day. Through my surreal portraiture and camera still lifes, I am thinking about what it means to be aware of constantly being watched and having no way to opt out. My work has often played with the line between the viewer and the viewed. This project too asks questions about how it feels to be looked at and to become the object of viewing.
