Artist Statement: Christina Massey expands the language of painting through woven surfaces constructed from repurposed aluminum beverage cans. She cuts, paints, and interlaces each strip by hand, transforming discarded consumer material into painterly marks, sculptural structures, and fields of color and texture. Her work explores labor, repetition, material value, and abstraction, while traces of branding and wear retain the material’s history of consumption. Climate data and patterns of environmental change often inform her decisions about color, rhythm, density, and structure. Moving between painting and sculpture, Massey creates responsive surfaces that reflect light, occupy space, and subtly shift with their surroundings.
