Artist Statement: Project Statement: ".... Traveling through the world produces a marvelous clarity in the judgment of men. We are all of us confined and enclosed within ourselves, and see no farther than the end of our nose. This great world is a mirror where we must see ourselves in order to know ourselves... There are so many different tempers, so many different points of view…." Michel de Montaigne as quoted in “The Necessity for Ruins, and Other Topics". Book by JB Jackson, p. 4, 1980 Project Statement for: Equivalents - 2026 Studies: These photographs were inspired by the work of the preeminent amateur photographer, Alfred Stieglitz. He made several hundred photographs pointing his camera into the sky at his summer home at Lake George, New York, between 1922 and 1934. More than 50 years ago, as an undergraduate student, I spent several days at the Eastman House in Rochester, New York, studying their archive of Stieglitz’s Equivalents. I didn’t understand. Strangely fascinating pictures, but a bunch of beautifully printed clouds.
