Artist Statement: In each meticulously crafted piece, Douglas Fanning pulls from his architectural background to create luxury furnishings that defy expectations of gravity and materiality. With steel, bronze and brass as the backbone of his practice, practical engineering and traditional and contemporary fabrication methods are deployed to achieve a sense of weightless monumentality. The effect is at once striking and subtle in its exploration of geometric and organic forms. By pairing strict minimalism with idiosyncratic shape-making, Fanning artfully transforms material into sophisticated compositions that both satisfy and challenge formal considerations of proportion, scale, structure and detail.
