Artist Statement
Bells are objects of peace. Bells signal alarm. They announce dinner. A bell is spiritual. A bell announces when someone is at the door, or getting in touch. Bells are symbols. Bells are music. A carillon of bells announce noon in an archetypal harmony. I stumbled upon bell making accidentally when experimenting with scrap metal from other projects. As a furniture maker, and a sculptor, I end up with leftover materials that I try and repurpose for new work. These bell experiments quickly became more elaborate, and I am currently working on a full, 24 bell carillon for the new Judgy Baby art space. A carillon is a series of chromatically tuned bells usually in a bell tower. Here at Gowanus Open Studios, I'll be showing the first bell prototype, and the largest of the bells at 8 feet tall. I'll also be showing a few other earlier bells alongside the prototype. Come ring my bells!
