Artist Statement: The electronic devices in this installation echo the news sound bites that punctuated our “Last Year”, an indeterminate period of time bounded by the onset of COVID and the gradual return to normalcy. Rendered in Morse code on some devices and letter by letter on an LED display on others, these fragments of language recall the headlines and declarations that filled our months in suspended animation. Taken together, they form a portrait of our collective consciousness: a cacophony of voices that overwhelms us with a sense of urgency, yet offers no clear path forward. They are cries for help that we can see but cannot decipher, hear but cannot understand.
