- Artist Statement
- Hurly Whirly, by artist David Barthold and fabricated by Beam Center youth, is a riff on the tradition of whimsical roadside art. The sculpture is meant to invoke a sense of wonder, joy and fun alongside the busy roadway. The project is a collaboration to bring public art to 4th Ave in Gowanus. Partners include Why Not Art, Arts Gowanus, Beam Center, Forth on Fourth Ave (FOFA), Gowanus BID Formation Committee, Gowanus Neighborhood Arts Advisory Committee (GNAAC), and the Old Stone House Brooklyn as well as the New York City Department of Transportation's art program (NYC DOT Art).
