- For the duration of my photography-based artistic practice, I have deeply considered the built urban environment and the unexpected intersections between the constructed and the unpredictable – weather systems, overgrowth, repurposing, whether by humans or animals. My current longterm project is a deep engagement with the engineered landscape known as Freshkills, once the world’s largest household waste dump and now transforming into a stunning 2,200-acre rewilded city park, to open to the New York public at some future date. The site requires innovative infrastructure in order to function, and this meeting point – between human ingenuity and wildlife – is deeply compelling to me as an artist and offers a potent and optimistic beacon of hope for the future. Within the Freshkills work I have explored a number of greater themes: native/ nonnative species, weather systems and atmosphere, beachfront air and water pollution, systems of chemistry and engineering behind the scenes, such as the leachate treatment plant, and the relationship between this unique site and its proximity to Manhattan. I have also been photographing the neighborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn, my home for many years, as it has transformed from being mostly abandoned along the waterfront blocks to a predictably overtouristed Brooklyn neighborhood, begging the question – is there an inherent nature to Place? Or is everything constantly in flux – us and our world? Previous work also includes a 12-year investigation into the remaining art, architecture, and landscaping of world’s fairs globally, examining these sites as unpredictable time capsules, featuring iconic architecture that was a past world’s idea of ‘the future,’ such as the Space Needle, Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic dome, and the New York State Pavilion in Flushing Meadows, Queens.
