- Artist Statement
- I am very far from an outsider or "self-taught". I watched my dad paint portraits as a child. Nathan Paul saw fit to start me painting in oils at age 5. I completed a BFA painting program in St. Louis’s Washington U, under the influence of a faculty still vibrant with the memory of Max Beckmann- my MFA study at Yale was more conceptual. Art is a balanced argument - lured by the subject (motíf). "Subject" is narrative, described & abstracted. This approach is naïve - a kind of optimism in the language of painting -and hopefully my ability to improvise.
