Miguel Ayuso

Artist Statement: My work is rooted in my experiences as an immigrant from Oaxaca, Mexico, navigating life in New York City. Through printmaking, I combine iconic imagery from Mexican culture with recognizable elements of New York's urban landscape to explore themes of identity, migration, and belonging. Working across woodcut, linocut, screenprint, and monotype, I embrace the distinct qualities of each process to develop layered and expressive imagery. In my most recent work, I incorporate self-portraiture through a personalized interpretation of the ancient Aztec figure of Tlaloc, the god of rain, lightning, and water. This recurring character serves as a personal symbol, carrying references to identity, cultural memory, and assimilation while navigating life between two worlds. My prints reflect an ongoing dialogue between my Mexican heritage and my experience of New York, honoring tradition while embracing the complexities of a contemporary immigrant experience.
