Artist Statement
Peggy Cyphers Traces of Beauty Peggy Cyphers’s paintings are narrative abstractions where semi-abstract characters, peculiarly familiar, operate as forces in a psychological dialogue, suggesting an automatic writing, a stream of consciousness of mental clarity & congestion of accelerated cultural time. Cyphers’ viscous, fluid painting process finds inspiration in Zen paintings on scrolls, prehistoric cave art, and the automatic writing of Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. Her paintings explore the biological and emotional experiences of mind, and its product, representation, generating gesture as product of the moment. Holding the potentiality of a trace of transcendent Nature, she allows for the creation of a immersive visual experience of the canvas. Traces of brushstrokes nestle creatures and figures in geological patterns, weaving vibratory spaces that are metaphors for our place in the universe. Her paintings occupy both a physical space & imagined mental space, thus modeling the evolutionary search for the space of utopia, beauty, the garden of Eden. 2025
