Artist Statement: On October 17 and 18, Powerhouse Arts will open its doors as part of Open House New York Weekend and Arts Gowanus Open Studios, offering visitors a rare behind-the-scenes look at the creative production spaces that shape the organization. Attendees are invited to move through our Fabrication Shops and Community Studios, including Ceramics, MGC, Print, Public Art, and the Digital Print Lab, to meet our team and creative communities. In addition to self-guided tours, attendees are encouraged to visit our free, drop-in programming on Saturday (Crafternoons) and Sunday (Conversations) to make art in community or learn more about our artist programs! Powerhouse Arts, a not-for-profit organization committed to creative expression, stewarded the redevelopment of the former Brooklyn Rapid Transit Power Station in Gowanus to create a new facility that houses fabrication facilities for ceramics, large metals, print, public art, and textiles. The building— designed by Herzog & de Meuron in collaboration with PBDW Architects— re-imagines the historic power plant as a new art center that meets the multidisciplinary needs of the contemporary arts ecosystem, with multi-use facilities for events, exhibitions, and education. Saturday Programming: 1–4 PM [Crafternoons: Designing Puppets of Earthly Delights]. This fall, Powerhouse Arts is opening its doors for Crafternoons, a series of free, drop-in art workshops for families, kids, and neighbors of all ages. Inspired by the immersive virtual reality exhibition _Masterpieces: A Virtual Experience of the Museo del Prado_, in this session, participants will design puppets inspired by Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights. Every workshop is a chance to play, imagine, and create together with new materials. Whether participants are seasoned makers or just curious to try something new, Crafternoons offers a welcoming space to connect, create, and engage with artwork featured in the exhibition. Sunday Programming: Open Studios with PHA's 26-27 Artists in Residence (Christina Barrera, Sasha Fishman, and Carlos Lara), and Conversations with our 2026 Artist Subsidy recipients, including "Printing the Personal: Panel Conversation with PHA’s 2025–2026 Artist Subsidy Recipients" and "The Incredible Scope of Site-Specific Installations: Panel Conversation with PHA’s 2025–2026 Artist Subsidy Recipients".
