Steve Ettlinger

Thumbnail of Featured Art: Small Forest, Eastern White Cedar, 72" to 90", 2022-2026

Artist Statement: Steve Ettlinger works in Stonington, Maine, and Brooklyn, New York, using local dead trees (from Maine) that he harvests himself. Starting with a precise scale drawing, basic work is done with a chainsaw and a grinder with especially destructive bits and then sanded until it is glass-smooth. Constantin Brancusi is his inspiration. He has been making these sculptures since 2013, and is the author of nine nonfiction books, a former picture editor, and a renovator of various old boats, apartments, and houses.
