- Artist Statement
- "To set something into stone is to make it permanent, to render the ephemerality of a moment, a thing, or a story into something tangible suspended in space and time. In this era of digital fallibility, social precarity, hyperconsumption and accelerated disposability, one wonders what will be preserved of our memory, what symbols and material imprints might be left behind as fragmented traces of our individual lives and our collective cultures. Artist Steve Pauley takes up this question of future archaeology through fascinating creative projects that begin with the engraved or sandblasted surface of a stone and expand out into new iterations remixed through other mediums such as paper rubbings, resin, lightbox sculpture, and photograms. Pauley got his start in stonework through a career in the funerary arts that began as a teenager, hand-chiseling, engraving, and sandblasting tombstones across Baltimore, West Virginia, and Brooklyn. In the years since he received a formal art education in sculpture, painting, and installation through the Maryland Institute College of Art’s MFA program, Pauley’s own multi-disciplinary practice has become further enhanced by his engagement with students, teaching classes ranging from ceramics and darkroom photography to life drawing. While Pauley’s practice might originate in carving granite or marble, he draws on many different kinds of production techniques to execute his artworks—such as the gestural styles of graffiti, hand-making paper pulp, printmaking by using stones as plates, or developing negatives from their textured surfaces for his analogue “stone reflection photography.” With a profound sense of openness and rich attention to the unconventional, Pauley constantly explores new material forms of image capture, turning the process of fabricating sculptures into ongoing playful acts of subversive experimentation." -Eleonor Botman
