Susan Handwerker

Artist Statement: My small clay figures are individually modeled, unglazed and the colors of the human race(s). Each one has something to say by means of posture or gesture. They tell me who they are and with whom or what they need to interact, and in what context. Each figure finds a home. Sometiimes they surprise me. My small acrylic paintings were inspired by the natural environment of the Pacific Northwest and mostly done al fresco. As in my figures, energy and gesture are the drivers. This Vancouver Island series of paintings continues to develop in size and scope.
