Vané Russo

Artist Statement: When asked what kind of paintings I make, I often find the question difficult to answer. My practice does not begin with a fixed subject or a prescribed vocabulary. It begins with color. I consider myself a colorist first. Color informs the line, the gesture, the rhythm, and ultimately the emotional architecture of the work. Even when the painting moves toward representation or realistic gesture, my primary concern remains the dialogue between hues—the tension, resonance, and space created between them. For me, language becomes secondary to the experience of looking. I am less interested in telling the viewer what a painting means than in creating the conditions for something to be felt. A painting can register physically before it is understood intellectually; a particular color, gesture, or juxtaposition can activate a memory, an association, or a projection that belongs entirely to the viewer. This space between the observed and the felt is where my paintings exist. They are not intended to resolve into a singular narrative, but to remain open—to sensation, memory, and interpretation. Ultimately, I am interested in what happens in the space between the painting and the person standing before it.
