Artist Statement: My work explores the border between representation and abstraction and aims to fracture and recontextualize boundaries of which identities, primarily at intersections of queerness, are defined. Using lived experience as a point of departure, I am motivated to paint what I know and have yet to observe in order to give greater context into queer identity and experience. The familiar spaces complement the emotionally-packed subject’s sense of self while also underscoring the inescapable tensions we cannot see. Through shifting autonomy, my work gives viewers space to radically challenge the limitations of our own perceptions of belonging, binary identity and self-expression.
