Clare Burson

Artist Statement: Clare Burson’s current body of ceramic work is a collection of self-portraits. Ceramic eggs in a spectrum of neutral colors embody contradictory and incongruous elements of the self. They are at once oversized, undersized, misshapen, unmarred, cracked, rough and cratered. They are punctured with metal pins, wrapped in neon rubber cord, and tangled in pink and red embroidery thread. They compete for space on pedestals and in nests or stand alone, elevated and precarious but undisturbed. Simultaneously the protected and the protector, the creator and the creation, Burson’s eggs are fertile with the world to come as well as archaeological remnants connecting us to a more fertile time.
