Harley Ngai Grieco (b. State College, PA) is a lens-based artist whose interdisciplinary practice combines photography, drawing, and sculpture. In the new series Latticework, Harley explores the drawings from the book “Chinese Lattice Designs” by Daniel Sheets Dye, a compilation of wooden window lattice from different time periods and locations across China. Each image contains a design superimposed onto different forested landscapes. To create each image, she made a fabric lattice, installed the lattice outside in nature, and double exposed the image on black and white film. This process of double exposure allows another image to appear within the design, creating an almost psychedelic interpretation of the landscape. She is exploring an impossible window view, creating a new archaeological view from these 13th-15th century designs.
