Artist Statement: Jan Dickey is a Brooklyn-based artist with a focus in painting. He uses historically researched, earth-based media: casein, egg tempera, traditional gesso, and oil. Likening paintings to natural ecosystems and living organisms, Jan is interested in surfaces that crack, peel and otherwise transform. From 2021-23 he engaged with the shape of the five-pointed star as a way to consider the artificiality and transience of human-made boundaries. He is currently tracing and painting the shapes made by natural light passing into his studio, deepening contemplation on the transitional nature of our material reality.
