Artist Statement: Kathie Halfin is a New York-based interdisciplinary artist who was born in Ukraine and raised in Israel. Her work explores the possibilities of weaving as a theatrical realm of symbols both universal and personal. Using painterly techniques, she creates gestural theatrical sculptures, sculpts the yarn and weaves it to tell a personal story of migration, kinship with the living beings and the Earth, and the ancient knowledge of weaving. Weaving sends one to its origins of craft and connection to nature, referencing the maker as a caring agent who stands in direct interaction with her surroundings to inform the work she is making.
