Artist Statement: Monaco’s work explores the intersection of pop culture and fine art using humor and a critical lens on authority, power, and audience. Her most recent works are reinterpretations of iconic ‘fine art’ pieces by male artists using the medium of stickers and washi-tape. By reinterpreting canonical pieces of the past using materials typically marketed to children and women and used for decorating everyday objects, she explores and critiques the work and strips away pretensions of the past.
