Stephanie Germosen

Artist Statement: I create work that I call “skins of experience” (Piel de Experiencia), using extremely tactile materials to communicate the urgency of remembering in conditions of displacement. These objects are transformed into souvenirs that recall the experiences of my Latin American identity. The majority of my work begins with objects and photos I have taken from spaces that my family has occupied recounting their journey between Colombia, Dominican Republic, and the US. By shifting the emphasis from the immaterial to the material, I repurpose these objects of enigmatic origin, giving disembodied memories physical form while retaining their tangential connection to notions of home.
