Artist Statement
The artist is a Brooklyn-based creator whose multidisciplinary practice spans mosaics, stained glass, ceramics, illustration, and painting. Their work is uniquely informed by a twenty-five-year career as a high school science teacher and an academic background that includes a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology and a Master’s degree in Forensic Science. This dual perspective allows the artist to bridge the gap between scientific inquiry and creative expression, specifically through a deep exploration of the chemistry of pigments and the physics of light. Their work focuses on the technical intricacies of how light is reflected, refracted, and absorbed, often drawing inspiration from repeating patterns found in atomic crystal structures and traditional Portuguese tiles. Having fallen in love with the New York City subway mosaics three decades ago, the artist has since pursued rigorous formal training, including studies at the Art Students League of New York, UrbanGlass, and Unicorn Art Studios. They also hold a certification in the ancient art of mosaics from The Mosaic School in Ravenna, Italy. The artist has been commissioned for several public murals and entrances throughout Brooklyn, including installations at the Dram Shop, Parlor Hair Salon, Rocco’s Pizza, and PS 321. Her work has recently been exhibited at the Edward Hopper House Museum, the Gowanus Arts Tower, and the Ossam Gallery. Whether depicting the vibrant energy of Brooklyn’s businesses or the microscopic beauty of crystals, the artist seeks to capture the soul of their surroundings through a blend of traditional and contemporary techniques.
